Fishs Eddy has crossed the Atlantic!

Very excited that my absolute favorite New York Store Fishs Eddy has opened a department within Liberty. I ADORE this shop, I found it by accident whilst shopping in Union square 4 years ago, and ever since then it is the first place I head when in NY (after starbucks for a green tea lemonade of course).
Last autumn I took my parents there (pic below) and got my mum hooked on it's fabulous homeware too. My favorite purchases are my brooklyn 'cawfee' mugs and my leaf shaped cookie cutters, but if i could kit out my kitchen with everything fishs eddy then i'd be a happy lady. The only store in the UK i've ever found remotely similar is Utility in Brighton. The sad thing is I fear this will be another Anthropology situation, whereby I waited years for the store to open here, and when it did, prices were beyond extortionate.

oh the Good Life...

Whilst I love living in London, I do really appreciate having an outdoor space to grow things in and over the past year we have completely transformed our little garden from what was little more than wasteland, into a little bit heaven. I’m mostly proud our vegetables, it’s so nice being able to pop into the garden for some fresh herbs or the odd courgette. Soon our tomatoes will be ready to enjoy, along with lots of lovely new potatoes.

All we need now are some Chickens, a couple of pigs and maybe a beehive. Yep, just call me Barbara.

A crafty pint

My local pub the Stapleton Tavern has started to do monthly Craft afternoons, this pleases me! This Saturday it is Fabric printing which I've never tried before so should be interesting. I also heard a rumor they are starting knitting nights, which would be nice to sit by their fire as the autumn nights set in making pretty things.

I'm trying to get back into making things again, yesterday I started to make a crochet ballet cardigan for my friend Kat who is expecting a little girl later this year.

I just found my favourite childhood book on Amazon, Sally's Secret. Sadly over the years I lost my copy, having lots of sisters generally meant our books were handed down, so lots got lost, many drawn all over (i remember my mum having to replace a rather defaced copy of Robert the Rose horse) or if they were particular favourites, simply fell to bits.

But Sally's Secret was my most favorite of all. A story about a girl who hosts a secret tea party in her garden it's no suprise as an adult I am obsessed with garden parties.

North East Coast

When I'm tired of life in the capital, I would love to move to the coast either Brighton or Tynemouth would be my preferences for different reasons.
I love the north east coastline, there are so many unspoilt beaches, King Edwards Bay and Durage Bay being my favourites. Being minutes away from the beautiful sandy beaches is something I miss when I'm in London, as even the nearest coastline is a train journey away and is mostly pebble beaches.
I remember summer evenings in my late teens spent heading to the beach and chilling out with my friend Sas, drinking cold beers, or hot summer days in the caves of Colourcoats (not usually one of my fav beaches)swimming in warm shallow pools left by the tide.

I went for a day out to Tynemouth with my parents the other week to explore the huge flee market and then for a nice drive up to blyth and whilst I was there thought I'd test out my vignette app.

So excited! it looks just like the Raleigh Heather I had as a kid! I hated it when bikes like this were no longer considered 'cool'. I was not a fan of mountain bikes!

Now, this may have been the worst spur of the moment decision i have ever made as riding it might be an issue! i havent cycled since i was 17 :-s

Utility Chic

Nowhere inspires me to blog quite as much as Brighton and my last trip was no exception when I stumbled upon Utility.

This treasure trove of WW2 era functional kitchen/dinning ware is such a treat. Think Fishes Eddy NYC meets traditional hardware store. The owners are so lovely and friendly, and are clearly passionate about what they do and the little world they are aiming to create

I wanted to buy everything in sight but unfortunately would not have been able to carry everything back to London so I have wisely decided to wait for the launch of their online shop(which I am eagerly anticipating), so I can go crazy!

My favorites were the selection of Enamel dishes & mugs and amzing Tea towls.

I wish this was at the bottom of my garden...

Outdoor Spaces

From previous blogs of mine (Party in the Garden, I want to have a Garden Party) you will see that i'm in love with dreamy garden parties on long summer nights. Yesterday I discovered the book 'Outdoor Spaces' from the wonderful people at Pottery Barn (which begs the question, why the heck doesn't London have a Pottery Barn yet??)
This book is definately on my Amazon wish list!

I wish I didn't live with boys, they just don't appreciate this sort of thing!

Brighton Brunch and Snoopers Paradise

Off to Brighton on Saturday with the lovely Miss Whiteford! I can't wait to hit the Lanes! There is on one shop in particular that I'm really looking forward to, it's called Snoopers Paradise and basically consists of dozens of individual antique/vintage/junk stalls all under one roof. Last Autumn when I went to Brighton with my Mum, we spent hours in there!

I also can't wait (If Lindsey's up for it) to try out 'Table', recently voted one of the best places to go for bruch by Stylist Magazine! Mmmmmm pancakes and bacon....

We planted loads of courgette plants earlier this year thinking some wouldn't grow. They all grew. Massively!Plus, I had no idea each courgette plant would produce so many vegetables! So now we have literally tons of them!

So far, I have made courgette cake, lemon courgettes, and courgette fritters. I can tell I'm going to maybe get sick of the sight of them! In the meantime, anyone have any nice recipies?

Oliver Bonas have trully excelled themselves with this amazing weekend bag, The Voyager. It ticks all the right tote boxes for me (eggshell blue? check! hint of Longchamp? check! tres tres chic? check check check!!) Just £45, (with £5 going to Ovarian Cancer Action) this makes me tres tres happy!

My blog has been severly neglected for the past few weeks and I'll tell you why;

I'm addicted to crochet right now! Call me an old lady if you like, but it is seriously theraputic, I do it on the bus to and from work and I swear I'm less stressed for it (usually I would be tempted to kill someone after a packed, noisy bus journey.) I don't even care If I receive strange looks a plenty.

My mum tought me a few weeks ago and since then I have been trying to make a large afgan throw, which will probably take weeks more but I am determinded not to shelf this project.

Carving pumpkins no longer cuts it

As a Brit, I would say that we don't celebrate the autumn season nearly as well as the US do. Here, you carve a pumkin for Halloween and thats where it ends. But the first time I went to New York in Nov 07 i noticed that the season is much more celebrated. Houses and streets are beautifully adorned with dried flowers, painted sparkly pumpkins and bunches of indian maize. The west village in particular was trully my favorite, these Glittery pumpkins on Charles street stopped me in my tracks. How fabulous are these?

I'm dying to try this myself and this year i've noticed i'm not the only one, this year i've seen painted pumpkins appearing everywhere. These ones at tales from an OC cottage are bling perfection. I don't know, maybe you're reading this in the US and thinking 'where has this girl been? we've been doing this for years' but as I said earlier, we British don't do Autumn well (in my opinion) and I can't understand why. Although we do have bonfire night which is one of my favourite celebrations.

Anthropologie - At least Ideas don't have a hefty price tag!

I'm a HUGE fan of anthropology so I could not wait for the London store to open, I have been counting the days as you well know. So it pains me deeply to say this:

I paid a visit as soon as I could in the store's opening week and I was so so annoyed about the pricing compared with the US! devistatingly so in fact. Some of the prices are simply not justified, especially in a recession. I did go there with the intention of blowing my budget but I really could not let myself. What made it more annoying was the numerous 'IT' girls filling there baskets to the brim. This is a shop that in the US was a little pricy but not too so, here in London, it is extortionate!

However, the store had literally just opened and it was packed so I will give it another go at a quieter time so I can have a proper wander round in a more relaxing atmosphere. I also can't wait for the january sale, as the Union square store does fab sales!

Your can't deny that the store looks amazing though!! and one thing I did leave with was lots of ideas, and they don't cost a thing!

I know it's only October but i'm already excited about Christmas!

Can you believe i've never had a real christmas tree?! my mother didn't like them and since moving out years ago, i've just never had the space. However, now I do and this year I can't wait to decorate for christmas!! So be prepared for many many tree related posts.

I've slowly began to collect decorations, (my first purchase being some vintage glass baubles on ebay) I want my tree to have random decorations (not matchy matchy) I love these felt creations by Rosy little things I'm also a big fan of scandinavian decorations (which I hope to find in Norway next month!!)
I may too try and make some of my own, there are so many things which I think look cute, like threaded popcorn and gingerbread men.

Eeeh I can't wait to trim the tree whilst drinking mulled wine and listening to cliff richard!

Origin Craft Fair

As mentioned earlier I visited the Origin Craft fair this week at somerset house. There were around 150 stalls ranging from jewellery to ceramics, with some amazing pieces of sculpture and art. One stall was even teaching people to make baskets so me and a friend had a go at making some out of magazines, and actually they turned out quite cool.

I live in quite an old building and i've often wondered about it's history, particuarly as right above the entrance it says 'BOOTH' in large writting. So today I googled, and I nearly died of excitement when I found this picture below. It's a still from a 1949 Richard Attenborough Film 'the brown boys' the building in the background is my flat!! (the window underneath 'auctioneer' is my kitchen!) This picture explains the 'booth' sign too. Apart from most of the signage no longer being there, the building hasn't actually changed that much. I really want to try and find the film now! It's so interesting to know what the building used to be, I wasn't expecting to see it in a film though!

Yesterday, I picked up some fabric sample books from the most amazing charity shop on camden high street for £2.50 each. One book was a baroque style and the other one coloured velvet.

So today I decided to cover the dated chairs in my flat. I'm quite please with the result, much better than the horrible brown fabric.

For years I have watched and admired my mum crochet the most wonderful things and wished I could do it too! so today she has tought me some basic stitches and i'm actually getting the hang of it! I'm trying to make a throw for my bed, but finding wool in London is not as easy as I thought.

Whilst I'm on the the craft subject, look what I found in a charity shop today for £5 each!!! all this kath kidston fabric! there's about 2 meteres of each pattern (it's usually £18 a metre) Jackpot!!

So now my head is swimming with ideas of what I can use it for!

I'm in love with Brighton

Today my mum and I went down to Brighton, it was the first time we'd ever been and I am in love with the place! we started of wandering around the North Laines area and discovered Snoopers Paradise, the most amazing junk/antique/vintage warehouse - the place was enormous and we spent hours in there. I bought some cute babycham coasters.

What I loved most about this town was it's vibe, so chilled and laid back. When we headed down to the beach we saw hundreds of VW camper vans, they just summed up the whole Brighton Beach lifestyle.

I want to live here!

A winning resolution!

My Friend Amy (not her real name) is a lucky person. I've never known anyone this lucky. I'm not talking about love, wealth or looks (although she's very pretty and lovely) I'm talking about random winning. If there's a competition, Amy will win it.

As a kid, she was the one in your school who won a years supply of Mars Bars (really!), now as an adult she wins everything from a years supply of soap powder to £500 to spend in Diane Von Furstenburg! A month ago it was a free trip to Paris and last fortnight it was tickets to a champaign reception and seats to see Hello Dolly (which she very kindly invited me too!)

So, from this you will see that this girl either has a very lucky charm or knows how to cheat! So i asked her, "how are you this damn lucky?!!" Her answer was simple; "I'm not, I just enter a lot of competitions."

Surely though, it's not that easy? Is it? If it were we'd all be winners, all the time. But then when I sat down and thought about it I realised how many competitions I pass up the chance of entering everyday. Tons! we're bombarded with them! and how many times do we complain about never winning everything? Amy isn't lucky, she's just very savvy and takes an opportunity when she sees it. A lesson we can all follow.

So, two weeks ago I decided to take a leaf out of Amy's book and start entering more competitions! But, I have certain rules:

I only enter competitions for things that I actually would love to have, wanting to win so you could sell it is greedy greedy greedy!
Only enter competitions I stumble upon. Don't go looking for them.
Don't give my life away, If a competition is asking for way too much personal information, be very wary!! you could either end up with an inbox full of viagra emails or worse, have your identity stolen.

This morning I turned on my computer to find I had won my first competition of this experiment!!! and i'm not kidding, it's one that I really really hoped to win, it's a free unique web design for this very blog! The talented Freya will be giving my blog a makeover so watch this space!! the competition was hosted by Mel at 'so about what I said...' I can't wait!

So next time you flick through a magazine and dream about winning that luxury spa break, ENTER IT!!!

Today at work my lovely friend Piotr gave me some Yogi rose tea to try. It was delicious but what I loved most was the label on it. Every teabag has a 'fortune' or message on it!

Mine read: 'A persons greatness is measured not by their possessions but by their gifts.'

ahhhh so true...

So does this mean i'm going to get a gift? hehe i'm kidding of course. I can't wait to buy a box...

The great cake debate - Hummingbird Bakery Vs Candy Cakes

Cupcakes. We all love them, that, I do not question. But something has been troubling me, Candy Cakes.

This bakery is quietly taking over stores across london with it's cutsy designs and acid lurid colours. Candy Cakes is getting rave celeb reviews from Madonna to Kate Moss (like a cake has ever passed her lips!) yet I really do not like this bakery.

Call me a traditionalist but I like my cupcakes simple but with amazing buttery icing and pretty glitteryness. Not the nasty bright colours on offer at candy cakes.

Let's look at the evidence shall we;

Candy Cakes

Pros: Fun designs, celeb following, good locations
Cons: Lurid colour icing, pricey (£3/cake), more 'muffin' shaped than cup cakes, taste dry and horrible, revolting flavours.

Hummingbird Bakery

Pros: Simple yet pretty designs and flavours, good value (£1.50-£2.00/cake) Great location on portobello rd
Cons: Small shop gets very busy

I think Humming Bird wins hands down. But I'm bias in this debate. What do you think? check them both out by following the links below and decide for yourself.

Primark chain shoes

For the past 18 months Primarks chain ballet pumps have been a staple item in my wardroabe. I love them to pieces, quite literally in fact, I actually bought two pairs in one colour so as to have a 'standby pair.'

Since last year I have bought 8 pairs in all different colours. Yes I'm obsessed but who wouldn't be?! I mean £8 for something that screams Chanelo!

Is anyone else loving the devine vintage packaging of the Boots Original Beauty Formula collection?

i'm a sucker for pretty packaging and I'm just in love with this range! The pastel colours, and clear glass bottles would look pretty on any bathroom shelf and what is even better is that these beautiful products don't come with the hefty price tag you might expect, in fact prices start from under £5. Bargin!

My First Benevolent Postcard Society card!!!

I was thrilled today to come home and find that my first BPS card had finally arrived!!!!!!!!!!

My card (which was Van Gogh's 'Girl in white') had travelled all the way from Atlanta, Georgia! and was from Rebekah, it included a lovely note.

This has really brightened up my day!

I can't wait until next month to send and recieve another card!

I just love the paintings of JH Lynch. Everyone has seen his 60s prints at some point, yet no one really knows about the Artist. Apparently he destroyed most of his work before he died...

I've had Tina (above) on my wall for a few years now, I got her for £1 at a car boot sale! Unfortunately I'm not having so much luck finding Nymph (below) for less that £60, and alot of the prints advertised on Ebay are reproductions. Have you seen Nymph or Tina anywhere????

Aren't they just fab?! They are also the insperation behind one of my favorite bars in Newcastle, Mr Lynch

There's something about Wednesdays.... I don't know about you but I start longing for the weekend at this point.

I'm a big fan of all things teacup related, and this pin cushion by the very talented Tasha B is simply delightful.
Aren't old suitcases just wonderful? I love these ideas for converting them into something new!

I have a serious addiction to lip balm. I have tons of the stuff, I just can't help myself. There doesn't seem to be an indicator in my brain that tells me; 'stop, why are you buying this, you have enough at home!' I'm just instantly drawn to it's pretty packaging and delicious smell!

So my obsession was delighted when I recently discovered Andrea Garland's website. I'm in heaven!!! She sources vintage compacts, tins and pillboxes and fills them with the most divine natural balms. Each product is a one off, and what's even better is that when you've used it all up, you can get your tin refilled for a fraction of the original price!

This week sees the last week of publication for the city evening freesheet 'The London Paper' and I for one am sorry to see it go.

The paper launched 3 years ago, right around the same time I stepped off the train from Newcastle (young, sweet and er innocent...) to start my new job in London town. Sure, I toiled with 'the other paper' for a couple of weeks but TLP had me hooked from day one and ever since, it has made my bus journeys so much more enjoyable and well, has just become part of my life here.

Sadly, in this recent financial climate the paper has failed to make a prophet and the Murdochs have called time and pulled the plug. I really believe they could have turned this around, the paper has a loyal readership and could easily have commanded a small price. I would certainly have paid for it.

My evening commute will no longer be the same. What will I do without Girl about town, Boy about town, The Columnist and the cartoon 'Em'. And even more importantly, I have yet to be mentioned by my secret admirer in 'Lovestruck!'

I refuse to go to the dark side and give my legance to The London Lite. Instead, I think i'll have to invest in a better phone so I can surf TheLondonPaper.com and Girl about town's blog. It's either that or stair blankly into space, and that would never get me mentioned in Lovestruck!

Broken Embraces

I've just got in from watching Broken Embraces, such a gorgeous film!! every scene is beautifully shot,I'd gone to see it without having read anything of it's synopsis (my favorite way to see a film) and adored every second.
Penelope Cruz is amazing in it, I just love every scene with her in. I'm not usually her biggest fan but she definately captures you in this role. I think the image above is iconic!

SATC filming has begun and I wish I was there, stalking like last last time!!!! There's rumours they are filming some of the new movie in London, if that's true I will be in full on stalker mode once again! (Lindsey, you will be joining me).

I'm slightly concerned about the picture below though! Is that a PERM?! I really hope this is a 'flash back' scene, because if it's not and that's what Patricia Field wants us all to sport, then god help us. Because, what SATC says, usually goes.

Many Blogs give me so much inspiration and ideas, it's safe to say I'm officially addicted to this world! But I wanted to share with you one of my favourite sites (which also happens to be the first one I followed).

My Life - My Loves continues to amaze me on a daily basis. The very talented Sharnel is the hostess with the mostess and is most definately the queen of cupcakes! Her parties make me want to host one myself immidiately. Every detail is thought about and presented with the greatest love and attention.

Today with great excitement, I learned she also has a cupcake blog, 'The cupcake company'. If only I lived in Brisbane, I'd be her best customer! oh well, at least the site alone is a treat for the eyes.

Staycation in a Beach Hut please...

Summers nearly over (when did it start?! I hear you say) and yet i'm still day dreaming about getting away for a holiday. Vacations are out apparently, everyone in my office is talking about the 'Staycation'. Which got me thinking, if I was to holiday somewhere in the UK what would I do? Well, hiring one of these lovely beach huts would be one fabulous idea. I just love their kitch charm. If I had my own it would be full of Kath Kitson style florals, bunting and seashells. Lovely!

Hmmm but I just learnt that Huts can cost as much as £160,000! now as much as I love the idea of owning one, even I think that's excessive for what is actually little more than a shed with a view.

Oh but what a view it would be!

They remind me of all the 1960s films I love, I can just imagine Holly Golightly having one in her appartment. Diana Camera... I miss real photos!

I've just bought a Diana camera from Amazon and can not wait for it to arrive!!

I've always loved the soft hazy images that this cheap little camera produces, an effect that can not be replicated with a digital camera however hard I try.

People never print photos anymore and I miss that. Remember the excitement that came with getting your holiday photos back? All the little memories that came wooshing back after a week of being back at home. I loved that feeling! It's just not the same when you have already seen a picture the moment you take it. Why do we have to have everything instantly? I love the wait, and the suprise of seeing images in a different way to how you saw them in reality. Am I alone in this?

Anyway, It's my intention to take it with me to Paris next month and take lots of dreamy photos of the city in the autumn.

The world in a bowl...

OK my lovelies, today I’m going to let you in on my secret to making magazine bowls.

You will need:
· Your chosen paper
· A Craft knife and protective mat
· Ruler
· PVA glue
· A clean flat surface
· A rainy day (optional, but you do need plenty of time and patience for this one)

Step 1

Choose what sort of material you are going to make your bowl out of. I’m using old Ordinance Survey maps in this example (10p each from a charity shop!) but you can experiment with all kinds of materials, glossy magazines are my favourite choice. Try not to use card or paper that is difficult to fold.

Step 2

Using your craft knife, cut the paper into strips of equal width. I find it easiest to use the width of the ruler, this saves you measuring each strip which would take forever. Cut as many of these as you can (around a 100–120 strips make a nice size bowl).

Step 3

Fold each strip in half twice vertically; making sure the printed side is facing outwards.

Step 4
Take one of your folded strips and apply a thin line of PVA glue all the way along one side. Now wind it round on itself forming a spiral. Keep winding more and more glued strips around to form the base of your bowl. It’s up to you how large you make the base, but bear in mind the diameter of your base will ultimately determine the size and shape of your finished bowl. Once you are happy with the size of the base, turn it upside down and paint a coat of glue on the bottom side and leave for a few hours (or overnight) to dry. This will add strength to the bowl.

Step 5

Once your base had dried, continue to wind glued strips around the outside. However, now you need to start building height gradually. The more gradual you make the increase the wider your bowl will be. Build up the height to whatever suits you.

And there you have it, you will finish up with a beautiful bowl to take pride of place!

I think these tissue paper pom poms are beautiful! I first saw them in the window of Mango on oxford street and have since noticed them apear here and there. They just look like giant peonies! I'm dying to try and make some, but what to do with them??? party decorations perhaps? Have to have a party then won't I!

I'm loving this poster!

It was designed during the scecond world war to be used in the event of a German invasion. However, it was never released to the public and got forgotton until 2000 when a book dealer found a copy in a box of old books.

The original was in pillar box red, but has since been reprinted in lovely pastel colours. I'd like an eggshell coloured one in my hallway.

I just love it's message, so typically British.

I saw these in Octopus for about £20 each and thought i'd try and make one myself. I have enough magazines in the flat!

It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, although a bit messy and time consuming. This bowl used about half a magazine. I'm really pleased with the finished product though! It's actually quite strong and it makes an original alternative to putting my old magazines in the recycling!
